A celebration of the life and music of jazz icon Joe Zawinul
by Curfew

The passing of Joe Zawinul on September 11th 2007 meant the loss of a unique jazz great – unique for creating new musical textures, contexts and experiences in every decade from the 1950’s to the present era.

Joe’s commitment to always looking forward, never back meant that his incendiary live performances didn’t feature many of his greatest compositions – he hadn’t played ‘Birdland’ live for nearly 25 years, or ‘Mercy, Mercy, Mercy’ or ‘In A Silent Way’ for even longer. Without him to continue leading the Syndicate into new territory, all his extraordinary music looked to be lost to the live scene for ever.

But now, Curfew are proud to present an exciting new live show recreating Joe’s extraordinary music: The Zawinul Legacy. Imagine the Zawinul Syndicate playing all Joe’s greatest music, not just from the two decades of the Syndicate itself but from the eras of Weather Report, Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley as well – that’s The Zawinul Legacy.

This amazing show is performed by the UK’s keepers of the Electric Jazz flame for the last 20 years, Curfew. Keyboard maestro Martin Lawrie is a pioneer of electric jazz keyboards in the UK – he is uniquely qualified to take on Joe’s role in the band. Nick Andrew is a true virtuoso equal to the likes of Scott Henderson who featured so memorably in the original Zawinul Syndicate. Joe’s bands always featured peerless rhythm sections - Steve Marshall (bass and flute) and David Bouet (drums) have the telepathic empathy and individual flair to lay down the sort of grooves that always drove Joe’s music, whether the atmospheric space-jazz of ‘Scarlet Woman’, the driving funk of ‘Black Market’ or the sheer energy of ‘Badia/Boogie Woogie Waltz’ and the classic ‘Birdland’.
